Ruth A. O'Brien, PhD, MSN '66, RN, FAAN

Ruth A. O’Brien is a professor at the
University of Colorado at Denver and
Health Sciences Center in the School
of Nursing. She teaches public health
nursing at the graduate level and
teaches in the research core for the
doctoral program. Dr. O’Brien is also
the director of evaluation for the
National Center for Children, Families
and Communities, an interdisciplinary
center devoted to research on effective
programs to improve the lives of
children and families in the
communities where they live.
Dr. O’Brien is best known for her work on a nurse home
visitation program for low-income, first-time parents and
its dissemination and translation into public health practice.
The program, Nurse Family Partnership, has served more
than 55,000 families in 20 states.
Currently, she is the primary investigator on two federally
funded studies to identify how to maximize quality implementation
of the Nurse Family Partnership. Recognition of
her expertise led to Dr. O’Brien’s selection as chair of the
research group for six national home visitation programs
participating in the Home Visit Forum, sponsored by the
Harvard University Family Research Project.
Following completion of her MSN degree, Dr. O’Brien
served as a faculty member at FPB School for seven years.
Dr. O’Brien, the recipient of numerous honors and awards,
was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of
Nursing in 2005 in recognition of her work to promote
evidence-based practice.
The Alumni Association President’s Award from the
Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing acknowledges
Dr. O’Brien’s remarkable dedication to nursing and her
leadership in the profession. |
