Ruth A. O'Brien, PhD, MSN '66, RN, FAAN

2006 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT'S AWARD

"An honor only comes to someone because of the opportunities that are afforded them to achieve success."

Ruth A. O’Brien is a professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center in the School of Nursing. She teaches public health nursing at the graduate level and
teaches in the research core for the doctoral program. Dr. O’Brien is also the director of evaluation for the National Center for Children, Families and Communities, an interdisciplinary
center devoted to research on effective programs to improve the lives of children and families in the communities where they live.

Dr. O’Brien is best known for her work on a nurse home visitation program for low-income, first-time parents and its dissemination and translation into public health practice. The program, Nurse Family Partnership, has served more than 55,000 families in 20 states.

Currently, she is the primary investigator on two federally funded studies to identify how to maximize quality implementation of the Nurse Family Partnership. Recognition of her expertise led to Dr. O’Brien’s selection as chair of the research group for six national home visitation programs participating in the Home Visit Forum, sponsored by the Harvard University Family Research Project.

Following completion of her MSN degree, Dr. O’Brien served as a faculty member at FPB School for seven years.

Dr. O’Brien, the recipient of numerous honors and awards, was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in 2005 in recognition of her work to promote evidence-based practice.

The Alumni Association President’s Award from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing acknowledges Dr. O’Brien’s remarkable dedication to nursing and her leadership in the profession.
