Shirley Mason Moore, PhD '93, MSN '91, RN, FAAN
Dr. Shirley Mason Moore is The Edward J. and Louise Mellen professor of nursing and associate dean for research at FPB. She received her BSN from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, in 1974, and her MSN from Case Western Reserve University in 1991. She has been on faculty at FPB since 1992. She received her PhD in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University in 1993 and became a professor in 2004. Currently, Dr. Moore is the head of FPB's Center for Research and Scholarship and the NIH-funded Center of Excellence for Self-Management Advancement through Research and Translation (SMART).
In her fifteen-year program of scholarship and funded research, Dr. Moore has developed and tested interventions to facilitate early home recovery following cardiac surgery, including nontraditional, cost-effective approaches using telehealth technology, and she has developed and tested interventions to increase exercise by individuals following acute cardiac events. She has focused her research on populations less traditionally studied, including women and elders with cardiac disease and, most recently, African Americans. In her current study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Moore is testing a family system intervention to help older cardiac patients maintain exercise. Her research is interdisciplinary, involving colleagues in the disciplines of exercise physiology, medicine, systems engineering, economics, psychology, social work, and statistics.
Dr. Moore has disseminated her research findings through articles in refereed journals and books. Her expertise in cardiac recovery and rehabilitation and in interdisciplinary research and education has been recognized by her induction as a fellow in both the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Nursing. She recently received The Ada Sue Hinshaw Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research and the 2008 Midwest Nursing Research Society Senior Scientist Recognition Award.
Dr. Moore is committed to developing the next generation of nurse scientists. To her students, she is a dedicated role mode! sharing expertise and guidance in coursework, proposal development, and dissertation writing. She includes students in her submissions to conferences and encourages students to use her databases to answer new research questions. She is currently director of an NIH-funded program to train pre- and post-doctoral nurse scientists.
Dr. Moore has held leadership roles in numerous professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Academy for Healthcare Improvement, and Sigma Theta Tau Intemational Honor Society of Nursing.
