ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY

To celebrate May Wykle's legacy within the nursing profession, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing has lined up a special collection of photography by Nannette Bedway.

Ms. Bedway's work has documented presidential campaigns, celebrities, musicians, and dancers, and her signature black and white portraits show a sensitivity that is captivating and exquisite.

Entitled The Art and Soul of Nursing, this gallery showcases the cultural diversity, leadership, creativity, scholarship, and specialty areas that represent the many facets of nursing and the impact that the Bolton School is making in research, education, and the community. The collection, conceptual in nature, encompasses the human lifespan, the unique qualities nurses embody, and the many career paths nurses pursue from an artistic perspective.

One of the more unique drivers behind the creation of this body of work is the event during which the photography will be unveiled. This event, The Art and Soul of Nursing: A Celebration, will be the platform for a major announcement for the school: the establishment of an endowed chair in honor of Dean May Wykle. Entitled the May L. Wykle Professorship, this will be the very first chair to be endowed for an African American at Case Western Reserve University, and one of only a few in the country.

The first phase of our photography, entitled The Art of Nursing, was completed in April 2006 and officially unveiled at the Bolton School's Alumni Celebration the following month. In an effort to beautify the nursing school building and enhance its identity and wayfinding attributes for students, faculty, visitors, and alumni, the gallery of photographs will coalesce into an eye-catching, permanent wall display spanning corridors of the Bolton School's ground floor this year.
