Evidence-Based Nursing Practice: Identifying and Implementing Best Nursing Practices Based on Evidence

What is Evidence-Based Practice?
Evidence-based practice is the integration of the most current research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values in the delivery of patient care.
Why is it important?
The ability to link evidence derived from research and other sources to nursing practice is essential in order to improve the quality of patient care and outcomes. Clinicians should use research as their base for clinical decision-making whenever there is an adequate research base available.
How is Evidence-Based Practice implemented?
The process of evidence-based nursing practice consists of identifying a clinical practice problem, searching the literature for the best available evidence, critically appraising the literature, identifying recommended evidence-based practice changes, implementing the recommended practice changes in the clinical setting, and evaluating the outcomes of the practice changes that were made.
What is the Hirsh Certificate Program in Evidence-Based Nursing Practice?
This certificate program is designed for nurses, managers, and staff development personnel in any health care setting: hospitals, home health agencies, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, case management organizations, and insurance companies. It provides a basic but comprehensive level of knowledge about evidence-based nursing practice. More advanced certification courses offered by the Hirsh Institute build upon this foundation. The goals of the Hirsh Institute for Evidence-Based Nursing Practice are to provide knowledge and skills that enable participants to engage in clinical practices that are based on the best available evidence and to contribute to organizational initiatives in their work places to meet and maintain evidence-based nursing requirements for JCAHO accreditation and Magnet Hospital status.
Program Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Describe the five-stage process of evidence-based nursing practice
- Discuss the relevance of evidence-based nursing practice for use in the work place
- Develop an answerable question relevant to a clinical practice problem or issue
- Design a search strategy for identifying best evidence pertinent to the clinical question
- Critique and weigh the evidence
- Define a proposed practice change
- Develop an implementation plan
