Who should attend?
This program is intended for staff nurses, nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, clinical educators, and others who are involved with implementing evidence-based clinical practice protocols and guidelines in any practice setting. It should be of particular interest to those institutions seeking or renewing magnet certification. Program attendees should have completed a basic certificate program (or equivalent) in evidence-based practice.
Why is it important?
Current practice often lags far behind the research evidence related to that practice. Multiple barriers and challenges to moving evidence into clinical practice have been identified. These occur at both the individual clinician and organizational levels. The delivery of nursing care which is based on the best available evidence will lead to improved patient and organizational outcomes. Thus, the health of the consumer and the health care system is at stake.
What is the focus of the program?
The focus of this intermediate-level certificate program is on individual and organizational behavior change strategies that can be implemented to facilitate the adoption of evidence-based protocols and guideline recommendations in the clinical setting. Several different models that are useful for increasing the uptake of new knowledge will be presented and their applicability assessed.
Specific strategies for achieving clinical behavior change will also be reviewed as well as the theories underlying their selection. In addition, the AGREE criteria for reviewing the quality of clinical practice guidelines will be reviewed and applied. Participants will have the opportunity to identify and critically appraise a relevant clinical practice guideline, identify barriers and facilitators to adoption of the guideline, and develop an action plan to implement the CPG in their practice setting.
Program Objectives
- Conduct an efficient search for relevant and current evidence-based clinical practice guidelines within the framework of evidence-based clinical practice.
- Assess the quality of a selected clinical practice guideline, using the AGREE tool.
- Select a model for behavior change to serve as an EBP implementation framework.
- Develop an action plan for implementing a selected CPG/protocol in a specific setting.
- Assess the clinical environment for readiness to implement a CPG/protocol.
- Identify and assess key stakeholders in terms of level of support and strength of influence in the organization.
- Explore the evidence base for individual and organizational change strategies to achieve practice changes in the clinical setting.
