Laptop Setup FAQ

Q. Do I have to turn the laptop off to undock it?

A. For the newer setups, no. You can do several things:

·         Click start/undock. Wait for it to respond to the command, then press the eject button (if you are going to class/meeting/etc)

·         Click start/shut down/hibernate (if you will be using it later that evening at home, and want it to start up a little faster)

·         Click start/shut down/stand by (again, if you are going to use it later)

·         Just undock (not recommended, but seems to work occasionally for newer systems)

Q. Does the laptop have to be powered off to dock?

A. This is the best practice. However, it sometimes work from stand by, hibernate or hot docking.

Q. I put the laptop in the dock, however, when I turn it on, the (select one, or more: internet/mouse/keyboard/usb) does not work, even though I can see things on the monitor. What do I do?

A. The laptop is not docked completely. Try one of the following:

·         Press the laptop FIRMLY into the dock, listening for another click

·         Undock the laptop and redock it firmly (best to turn it off completely…hold power key in until it switches off)

Q. Why do I have two home drives?

A. Your H drive is automatically mapped by the server. However, when you are not docked, it will not auto map. So you have a home drive on another letter as well, to use when you are not docked. They are the SAME drive. Just different letters.

Q. How do I get to my server drives while undocked?

A. Whether on wireless at Case, or elsewhere, you must log into VPN before accessing your server drives from your work laptop.

Q. I am undocked and my wireless is not connecting. What do I do?

A. First, verify that your wireless is enabled.

·         Look in the system tray (on the lower right, near your clock)

·         Do you see the two symbols below? (wireless adapter, and radio bars)

·         No.

o   You must enable the wireless.

o   Locate the wireless shortcut on your desktop –or- go to start/settings/network connections and locate the wireless icon.

o   Right click

o   Choose “enable”

·         Yes, but there is an X through the radio bars.

o   Toggle the wireless switch on the left side of the laptop to turn the radio on

§  No switch? Click FN-F2 key combo to turn the radio on

·         Yes, but there is an X through the wireless adapter

·         Click on the adapter. If it gives you a choice of networks to connect to, choose your network, and click “connect”.

·         If it says that your connections are handled by another program, click on the radio bars, and follow through to connect to your network.

·         NOTE: you always have to allow a connection initially to a new wireless network. *sometimes* you may have to again, for that same network. Not always.

Q. I am docked, should my wireless be on?

A. No. Right click either the wireless shortcut, or the wireless adapter in the system tray (see picture above) and choose “disable”.

Q. When I undock, my wireless is still disabled. Why?

A. Your laptop will “learn” its dock vs. undocked profile. You may have to manually enable and disable a couple of times initially.

Q. When my laptop is undocked, and I start up, it gets stuck on “settings” for a long time. What do I do?

A. Toggle the wireless switch to OFF. When your laptop is undocked, and wireless starts up, it searches for the Case ADS servers…and it cannot find it. By having the wireless off, it will not try to contact the server. *this may not happen all of the time.

You can then turn wireless back on after you have logged in.

Q. I tried to log into INS.CWRU.EDU, and it will not let me in. What do I do?

A. Make sure caps lock is not on, and that you are typing both the user name and password correctly.

If that does not work, change the log in setting to the local computer (nurs-xxxx-xx) and log in. This will log you into a different profile, however. You may access your documents by going to my computer/c/documents and settings/your user name (possibly.ads, possibly just the user name)/documents

This will not happen often (or maybe ever), but this is a work around until you dock on campus to regain the INS profile.

NOTE: if you use Outlook, you will have to use Webmail until you redock to log into INS.

Q. My SPSS works in the dock, but not on wireless/out of the dock. What do I do?

A. SPSS 15 needs to be licensed using the wired card, and wireless card. You will have to run the license authentication wizard again while on wireless. Go to start/programs/spss/authentication wizard. Choose internet when it asks, and enter the Auth code (given to you by the Help Desk). Run through the wizard. This will relicense the product.

This should take care of non connected use as well. If it does not, contact the Help Desk.

Q. I do not see Easy CD creator on my computer. What should I do?

A. You will have either Roxio or Sonic CD software. Look for those in programs. They have a different setup than the old Easy CD creator program, but it is basically the same. Just follow through the wizards and choose the appropriate choices for your project (IE: audio/data/copy, etc...)

If you have problems, please contact the Help Desk.

Q. Do I have a plug for my laptop, when I undock?

A. Yes. You should have a travel plug in your laptop bag.
