LAPTOP AND COMPUTER SETUP

You must take the following steps to lock your machine down to prevent infection from viruses.

The IT department at the Nursing School does not repair personal computers. However, we can guide you in the right direction and provide you with the tools that will help you with most of the issues you may face.

Like a vehicle, you must perform routine maintenance. And here is your One-Stop-Shop for happy computing.

Don't have a laptop yet? Not sure what to purchase? Check the computer recommendation site for help with your purchase: http://fpb.cwru.edu/it/recommended.shtm. If you have any questions on what to purchase, feel free to contact us and we can assist you with your purchase (Dell) or give advice on where to look for other systems.

Once you have your laptop:

Follow these links. Perform all of the steps. Then come back to this page for more J

1.       Before anything, you want to activate your CaseUserID (which is also your email acct. and blackboard acct.) So go to http://fpb.cwru.edu/it/accountact.shtm and you may start your activation. (you must be a registered student to activate your UserID.) If you are already activated, move on to step 2.

2.       Make sure that your computer has ALL of its Windows Updates (ESPECIALLY if it is WinXP or Win2k). Go to http://fpb.cwru.edu/it/critical/howtorunwindowsupdate.htm for instructions on how to perform windows updates. NOTE: you should always make sure these are up to date. If you are online often, you can schedule them to update automatically. (RECOMMENDED)

3.       Make sure you antivirus software is up to date. Whether you use McAfee or Symantec (Norton), you always need to have up to date virus definitions. Don't have antivirus software? Download it for free from Case. You are entitled to many free software packages and can read up on how to obtain them by going to http://fpb.cwru.edu/it/softwarecenter.shtm

1.       Do you have a virus? Check out Symantec's website for fix tools and info on how to get rid of those buggers by going to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ !

4.       Always set an Administrator password, and an account password (if you use an account name other than Administrator.) Always! Go to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;279783 to find out how.

NOTE: if you have Windows XP/Vista Home... you will need to log in under SAFE MODE to change the Administrator password. Here is how...

A. Restart your computer
B. Before the computer starts up, start pressing the F8 key in 2 second intervals (during the BIOS)
C. Choose log into SAFE MODE
D. Log into the Administrator profile
E. Go into start/control panel/users and click on Administrator
F. Choose to change the password.
And you are set!

5.       For Windows XP, be sure to turn the firewall ON. For XP with Service Pack 3, you will go into start/control panel (or settings/control panel)/networks/ and Windows firewall will be in that window.

6.       Spyware! Stay clean…you can read up on spyware by going to http://fpb.case.edu/it/spyware.shtm

1.       Note: after installing anti spyware tools, you must continue to perform updates, similar to antivirus software updates. Without updates, the tools will not be effective.

2.       Please be sure to install and run Windows Defender as well, at http://www.microsoft.com. This will update automatically each time you are on the internet.

7.      Connecting to wireless at Case (laptops).

1.       Your computer will automatically recognize the wireless network (CaseGuest), but you may have to ALLOW it to connect. Please click on the wireless connection icon in the system tray (near the clock) and choose to connect to the “unsecured network” (this will look different on various Windows operating systems, but is essentially the same process). You can now connect to mail, internet, etc on your laptop.

2.       If you want to connect to Case restricted items, such as library journals, etc, you must install and log into VPN. You can find instructions here: http://fpb.case.edu/it/vpnhowto.shtm <--It is advised to install VPN.

Remember, keeping your computer up to date and secure is your responsibility before accessing the Case network. While accidents do happen, everyone must do their part for preventative maintenance and responsible computing. Please become familiar with our security and maintenance section (http://fpb.case.edu/it/security.shtm) to help keep your computer running its best!
