SPAM FILTERING

Spam Filtering

Spam is a worldwide problem with email. And by using the Case email system, you are open to receiving a lot of spam. Due to being a college environment, the University cannot restrict the email being sent to you based on key spam terms. But they are able to provide spam control that is user initiated, spam control that gives the user the freedom to create accept and deny lists to help control what enters their inbox.

Activating and using the Case spam control is a two step process. One is activating the spam control on the servers, and the second is creating a filter on the email client (Webmail, Eudora, Outlook, etc...)

How to Set Up Spam Control

1. Log into http://spamcontrol.case.edu with your UserID and password.
-click 'enable' then click 'ok'.
-you may use your 'accept' and 'reject' lists to override any of the auto junk mail filtering.

2. Create the filter in your mail client (DO NOT forget this step!)
-if you use Webmail (or IMAP) click here.
-if you use Eudora on POP mail, click here.
-if you use Outlook on POP mail, click here.

NOTE: If you use Eudora/Outlook with IMAP, please create the filter according to the Webmail instructions.

What exactly does Spam Control do?

When users enable spam control at case, the server will mark emails that resemble spam with a +JunkMail in the header. This is then read by the filter the user creates, and filtered to the specific JunkMail box that the user has also created.

Because spam control is not 100% accurate, it is recommended that users check their JunkMail boxes often for legit email that might have been flagged as spam. Users may add that email address or domain to their 'accept' list on the spam control website.
