NURSING INFORMATICS

MSN Majors

The nursing informatics specialization emphasizes the following:

  • preparation of graduates who can analyze nursing information requirements
  • design of systems
  • management of information and its technological requirements
  • identification of system implementation strategies
  • implementation of user training strategies
  • evaluation of system effectiveness in clinical, educational, administrative, and research venues


Students in nursing informatics will specialize in an area of interest within the major. These areas include but are not limited to:

  • systems analysis and design
  • emerging technologies
  • database management
  • organizational implementation of information systems


An internship of one semester will provide an opportunity for the student to obtain practical experience as a nursing informatics specialist (NIS) in a variety of clinical, educational, research, and administrative settings. The program includes 500 hours that may be credited toward the required 2,000 hours for certification as a Nursing Informatics Specialist through the ANCC.
