Nurse-midwifery practice is the independent management of women’s
health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, childbirth,
the postpartum period, care of the neonate, and the family planning
and gynecological needs of women from adolescence to senescence.
Certified nurse-midwives practice within a health care system
that provides for consultation, collaboration, or referral as
indicated by the health status of the client. The CNM practices
in accord with the Standards for the Practice of Nurse-Midwifery,
as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).
Nurse-midwife students work individually with a clinical preceptor
in a variety of out-patient, in-patient, and out-of-hospital
settings. Graduates will be eligible to take the certification
examination administered by the ACNM Certification Council,
Inc. With the addition of 3 clinical hours in NURS 559, students
are eligible for dual certification in Women’s Health.
