Nursing Informatics

Managing both the "high touch" and "high tech" aspects of health care

Nursing informatics is where computer science, information management, and nursing meet. Specialists lead healthcare institutions through the transition to electronic medical records by developing and implementing clinical information or documentation systems. After implementing a system, they help to maintain, evaluate, and train others to use it effectively.

Note: Availability of this major is dependent on enrollment. Contact the program director, Dr. Christine Hudak, if you are interested in nursing informatics.

At FPB, the nursing informatics specialization emphasizes the following:

  • preparation of graduates who can analyze nursing information requirements
  • design of systems
  • management of information and its technological requirements
  • identification of system implementation strategies
  • implementation of user training strategies
  • evaluation of system effectiveness in clinical, educational, administrative, and research venues

Students in nursing informatics will specialize in an area of interest within the major. These areas include but are not limited to:

  • systems analysis and design
  • emerging technologies
  • database management
  • organizational implementation of information systems

The nursing informatics major, as part of FPB's MSN program, requires 37 credit hours of coursework (many online), plus a flexible 500-hour internship that provides an opportunity for the student to obtain practical experience as a nursing informatics specialist (NIS) in a variety of clinical, educational, research, and administrative settings. Coursework is usually completed within three semesters, and the 500-hour internship may be credited toward the required 2,000 hours for certification as a Nursing Informatics Specialist through the ANCC.
