Assistant Professor Elizabeth Click comments in The Plain Dealer about the detrimental effects of disrupted and inadequate sleep on the millions of Americans--including nurses and other health care professionals--who regularly work outside the typical daily schedule.
Recent research has tied a number of major diseases, including obesity, heart disease, digestive disorders, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's, and cancer, to a lack of sleep or disruption of our circadian rhythm schedule.
"Our society is very crisis-oriented and it takes major problems and repeated issues to foster people's interest in trying to make a correction, despite compelling research indicating change might be in order," Dr. Click says.
