- Try to Relax: Dr. Judith Maloni's pregnancy bed rest research featured in Australian magazine: Babble Australia asks, "Bed rest is prescribed by 90 percent of obstetricians, but does it do any good?" Visit FPB's pregnancy bed rest website for more details.
- Carol Savrin, DNP, CPNP, FNP, BC selected as Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP): Dr. Savrin received the honor on June 20, 2009 at the AANP annual conference. AANP is the first national organization created for nurse practitioners of all specialties, and the Fellows program recognizes "nurse practitioner leaders who have made outstanding contributions to health care through nurse practitioner clinical practice, research, education, or policy."
- Challenges of Raising Technology-Dependent Children: Advance for Nurses features FPB instructor Valerie Toly, MSN, CPNP, RN, who is researching how families cope with children dependent on technology for their breathing, nutrition, and cardiovascular function.
- Giving Patients Brighter Days to Help Them Sleep at Night (Plain Dealer: June 9, 2009)
- Postdoctoral fellow Ann S. Williams, PhD, RN, penned the essay My Life with Diabetes: A Play in Four Acts for the Summer 2009 issue of Think magazine. The article details how diabetes has affected her family, her life, and her research, as well as her advocacy for a proposed Ohio bill that would require health insurance companies to cover diabetes self-management education and supplies necessary to prevent complications among patients.
- A ‘Light Bulb’ Moment for People with Dementia: Dr. Patricia Higgins is part of a Case Western Reserve-led collaboration that tests whether new fluorescent lighting developed by GE can synchronize hospitalized patients’ sleep-wake cycles. FPB is joined with the School of Medicine, the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (GRECC), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lighting Research Center, and GE Consumer & Industrial on this exciting project.

- Dozens of High School Students to Spend Time on Campus Gaining Exposure to Health Careers, College Life: FPB participates in the Bridging Pathways to Health Careers program, a collaborative project of Case Western Reserve University, Cuyahoga Community College, and Cleveland State University.
- Psychological Distress in Mothers of Technology-Dependent Children: Instructor Dr. Valerie Toly featured in an expert interview in Medscape Today to discuss the high risk for psychological distress that mothers of technology-dependent children face. She also explains how pediatric nurse practitioners can help identify and manage psychological distress in these families.
- Raising Our Kids: Skin-to-skin contact is good for all babies, but it is especially good for infants that are born prematurely. Dr. Susan Ludington's kangaroo care study is featured on Pat Carroll's program on CBS News Radio 880.
- BSN student Lauren Flaherty receives top award from the Midwest Nursing Research Society: Ms. Flaherty's poster and abstract, entitled "Relationships Among Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, Fatigue, and Depression in Fathers of Twins" won First Place in the 2009 MNRS Undergraduate Student Poster Competition and a Citation Award for overall best abstract at the 2009 MNRS Conference.
- 18th Annual Florence Cellar Conference aimed at helping caregivers: With the "baby boomer" generation aging and more children being diagnosed with special needs, there are a lot of families caring for a loved one at home. Dr. Diana Morris is interviewed by WKYC Channel 3's Maureen Kyle.
- Dr. Jaclene Zauszniewski presented with the 2009 Melva Jo Hendrix Lectureship Award from the International Society for Psychiatric Nurses: The award recognizes psychiatric-mental health nurses "whose careers exemplify Dr. Hendrix's values and principles – her unswerving commitment to improving care for the underserved, stigmatized, or disenfranchised and her dedication to mentoring others."

- Shirley Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN recognized at MNRS Conference: Dr. Moore was presented with the 2009 John A. Hartford Foundation/MNRS Award for Leadership in Geriatric Nursing Research at the Midwest Nursing Research Society 33rd Annual Conference. It honors those who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in geriatric nursing science and impacted quality of care for older adults through scholarship and mentorship.
- Post-doctoral fellow and nurse diabetes educator Ann Williams, PhD, RN, appeared live on WKYC Channel 3’s noon news on Tuesday, March 24 to mark National Diabetes Alert Day. Anchor and senior health correspondent Monica Robins interviewed Williams, who talked about warning signs of diabetes, how to determine if someone is at risk, and her research on visually impaired people’s use of insulin pens. Along with Williams was Yoda, her service dog who responds to drops in blood sugar.

- Diabetes Study to Test Use of Insulin Pens by Visually Impaired: Post-doctoral fellow and nurse diabetes educator Ann Williams, PhD, RN, who self-diagnosed her diabetes in 1991, explores how those who are both diabetic and visually-impaired cope with the disease.

- Dr. Amy Zhang's "Stay Dry" intervention to test men with incontinence problems from prostate cancer treatments: Dr. Zhang and researchers from University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, and the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center are making use of a $2.4 million NIH grant to determine the effectiveness of teaching pelvic floor muscle exercises combined with biofeedback techniques and subsequent therapy. - Nursing instructor Valerie Toly, MSN, RN, CPNP will present her abstract, "Families of Children Who Are Technology Dependent" at the 2009 American Thoracic Society International Conference. The conference takes place on May 15-20 in San Diego, California and serves as one of the largest gatherings of pulmonary and critical care clinicians and researchers in the world.
- Assistant Professor Evelyn Duffy, DNP, ANP/GNP-BC, FAANP, has been appointed to the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association's (GAPNA) expert panel on "Transitioning to Adult-Gerontology APRN Education: Ensuring the APRN Workforce Is Prepared to Care for Older Adults." GAPNA is "the organization of choice for advanced practice nurses who want to pursue continuing education in gerontological care and who seek peer support from experienced clinicians."
- "Audio Instruction for Use of Insulin Pens by Blind People," a research project developed by post-doctoral student Ann Williams, PhD, RN, CDE, receives funding from the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) and Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). Dr. Williams' recent article, "Diabetes and Visual Impairment: Identifying Needs, Ensuring Full Accessibility," is available online at DiabetesVoice.org.
