author and nurse greg mortenson speaks at fpb
Greg Mortenson, the man behind the best-selling book Three Cups of Tea and a nurse, visited FPB on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 to discuss how nurses can play critical roles as leaders, health advocates, and ambassadors of friendship and good will around the world.
Mortenson's book chronicles his quest to bring education to rural villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he has already established or significantly supported 130 schools and vocational centers that have changed lives of 38,000 schoolchildren (including more than 28,000 girls).
From his biography:
In March 2009, Mortenson received Pakistan’s highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan (“Star of Pakistan”) for his dedicated and humanitarian effort to promote education and literacy in rural areas for fifteen years. [...] Mortenson is a living hero to rural communities of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where he has gained the trust of Islamic leaders, military commanders, government officials and tribal chiefs from his tireless effort to champion education, especially for girls.
Three Cups of Tea is this year's selection for Case Western Reserve University's Common Reading program. He was the keynote speaker for Case's 2009 Fall Convocation.
Mortenson was also the featured guest on the August 26 edition of Around Noon with Dee Perry on WCPN 90.3 (NPR).
