FPB alum and immediate past president of the American Nurses Association Rebecca M. Patton, MSN'98, RN, FAAN is bringing her extensive perioperative nursing experience to FPB by filling the newly-created faculty position initially called the Atkinson Visiting Instructor in Perioperative Nursing. Her new role began on January 4, 2011.

"This new position is in concert with our school’s strategic plan and is supported entirely through the generosity of Lucy Jo Atkinson, an FPB alumna and longtime leader in perioperative nursing," says Dean May L. Wykle. "Dr. Atkinson's donations have been restricted exclusively for the development of a perioperative nursing component into the undergraduate curriculum."

This donation was given as an important step toward the development of a substantive curriculum component focused on the nursing role in the operating room. This component will give FPB students exposure to a valuable nursing role, provide a mechanism for teaching critical content related to asepsis and infection control, and address the growing need for nurses prepared to function in an operating room setting.

"Therefore, the development of this new visiting instructor position is being made possible because of the convergence of societal need, donor intent and generosity, and a person uniquely qualified, Becky Patton," Dean Wykle says.

"Incorporating a more dedicated focus on the practice of perioperative nursing and safety in the surgical environment will certainly prepare FPB graduates to assume leadership roles in the future," Patton says. "Operative settings require unique skills and knowledge in our ever increasing complex health care environments, and this dedicated focus will help meet the growing needs. I am proud to be a part of this initiative and look forward to advancing both our students and the school."

The FPB School of Nursing congratulates and welcomes Ms. Patton and also extends thanks to Associate Professor and Associate Dean for the Undergraduate Program Dr. Marilyn Lotas for tirelessly working toward accomplishing the goal of creating a position that will fulfill an important piece of the undergraduate curriculum.
