Associate Dean for Research and SMART Center Director Shirley M. Moore is one of the principal investigators of the Childhood Obesity Prevention and Treatment Research (COPTR) initiative, funded by the National Institutes of Health as a major new intervention to reduce overweight and obesity rates in children.

Cleveland’s childhood overweight and obesity rate is about 40 percent and shows no sign of leveling off. The $12.5 million program, one of only four in the country chosen as part of the COPTR initiative, will be led by Case Western Reserve University with clinical expertise provided by University Hospitals (UH) Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Fifty Cleveland schools with 450 overweight and obese students will participate in the study.

"The COPTR program in Cleveland is a multi-level approach to a multi-level problem," Moore says. "It was the strength of our institutions’ existing relationships which set our community apart from others. Given the magnitude of our obesity problem, we are bringing together top experts to devise a sustainable solution for our children."
