The Bolton School Honors Its "Stars" in its Biannual Award Ceremony

The Bolton School recognized a wide range of achievements garnered by its faculty, staff, and students in a special awards ceremony held on September 21st. From NIH grant funding to awards from national nursing organizations, from special scholarships and fellowships to international training programs, members of the Bolton School community have proven their unwavering dedication to nursing education, administration, research, and practice.

Nursing today is in a state of crisis the world over, and in the United States alone there are approximately 126,000 nursing positions currently unfilled in hospitals. According to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN), the nursing workforce will fall to nearly 20% below the projected need as the nursing workforce continues to shrink due to the retirement of older nurses. By 2020, there will be at least 400,000 fewer nurses available to provide care when needed. Nurses are already the largest segment of the healthcare workforce. Their vital role in the interdisciplinary care for elders will be met by an ever-growing critical need for healthcare, particularly because by 2020, the baby boomer generation will have reached (or surpassed) its 60s and 70s.

Therefore, the Bolton School's biannual award ceremony, in a theme called "Shooting for the Stars," was a fun and light-hearted way to show appreciation for its members' many accomplishments and contributions in the diverse field of nursing. A number of winners received a certificate that presented them with a real star (as in the celestial bodies viewable in the evening sky) named in their honor--an acknowledgement that their advancements made for nursing will have positive, influential repercussions for years, perhaps eons, to come.

Congratulations to all our winners! The complete list of award recipients in the September 2005 event is as follows:
