Case Students Represented Well in the House of Delegates

Statements made by students:
Question for Vice Presidential candidate:

"Everybody always mentions their positive attributes and characteristics; however, I believe that a good leader should be able to recognize his/her weaknesses.  Are you able to do this and can you please give an example of a time when or a situation in which you struggled and how you dealt with this difficulty"
~ Deirdre J. Murphy ('10)

"Pro" statement to the Resolution titled: In Support of Requiring CPR/AED Certification For All Secondary School Coaches and Trainers

"I would like to speak pro to this resolution.  At the beginning of this year, my friend's father, who is a wrestling coach, had his heart stop during his son's wrestling match.  His life was saved by another coach and the trainer through the use of CPR and an AED.  He has now made a full recovery.  I have heard of many other success stories with the use of CPR and AEDs in sports emergencies.  On site personnel should be trained.  I was a swim coach for a summer team.  Swim coaches must be trained in water safety, CPR, AED and life guarding to protect their swimmers.  All coaches and trainers should be CPR and AED trained for the safety of their athletes, coaches and spectators.  As an athlete, I know how hard a person will push his or her body for the love of the sport, ignoring signs from their bodies signaling them to slow down.  It is a relief knowing emergency help is available when things go wrong.
~ Janine Machala ('09)

"Pro" statement to the Resolution titled: In Support of Increased Education About Eating Disorder Awareness and Prevention

"(NSNA has been known to support awareness for diseases and specific genetic disorders.  I believe eating disorders are "hidden" disorders that are not emphasized enough in our nursing education.  That may be because we are uncomfortable confronting such issues when so many of our own peers struggle with eating disorders).  As nurses, we have to have the courage to confront our patients about eating disorders - and that courage will only come with more awareness and education."
~ Julia Rose Judge ('09)

"Pro" statement to the Resolution titled: "In Support of Legislation That Bans The Use of Cooking Oils Containing Trans Fats in Restaurants in Order To Improve Cardiovascular Health"

"Although the recent "trans fat" legislation is currently at the state level - as nurses, we should realize that diet regulation and laws affect our patient at a very personal level.  The consumption of trans fat will ensure that our patients have clogged arteries, but we need to ensure that this does not become a chronic problem"
~ Emily Friedlander ('11)
