Student Employment Opportunities

Learning Resource Center: Graduate Teaching Assistant

Eligibility: Students must be formally admitted to a graduate level program within the School of Nursing. Eligible programs include all MSN, Post –Masters DNP, and PhD programs. Graduate Teaching Assistants are required to have a current Ohio Nursing (RN) license.

Experience: Students applying for a position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant should have at least one to two years of current clinical experience. Clinical practice in a medical surgical or critical care setting is desirable, as well as experience in pediatrics or obstetrics.

Responsibilities: Graduate Teaching Assistants are responsible for delivering all undergraduate (BSN and pre-licensure DNP) lab sessions. Topics for these lab sessions involve basic medical surgical skills as well as physical assessment skills. Sample lab topics include bed making, vital signs, dry sterile dressings, foley catheters, chest tubes, IV insertion, and medication administration. Physical assessment labs are divided into systems and allow for demonstration and return-demonstration of the physical exam. Opportunities to work with students in pediatric and obstetric labs are available. Labs are limited to 12 students per lab and are usually team-taught with 2 to 3 Graduate Teaching Assistants. Lab sessions are between 1to 2 hours in length, with approximately 4 to 6 labs per day.

Hours: Graduate Teaching Assistants contract to work between 5 and 20 hours per week for 16 weeks during the semester. The Learning Resource Center is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm. Many Graduate Assistants prefer to work two 10 hour days to receive the maximum amount of tuition reimbursement.

Reimbursement: Graduate Teaching Assistants have the option of receiving tuition reimbursement and/or stipend for their teaching hours. The following schedule is used to calculate compensation for students requesting part tuition/part stipend and is adjusted accordingly for students preferring one or the other.
