DOCTOR of PHILOSOPHY in NURSING (PHD)

PROGRESSION IN THE PROGRAM

Advancement to Candidate Status:

To advance to candidate status, PhD students must pass an oral examination and provide a written research proposal at the time of the examination. The examination and proposal are evidence of the student's knowledge and ability to synthesize and apply research methodologies to existing knowledge. The oral examination focuses on the nursing discipline, research methods, statistics, and substantive knowledge. The candidacy committee consists of three doctorally prepared FPB faculty members.

Proposal Defense:

The purpose of the proposal defense is for students to demonstrate their synthesis and application of substantive knowledge; research methods; and statistics. Students defend their dissertation proposal and responses to related questions.

Dissertation Defense:

Students must successfully defend their dissertation in an oral examination with the dissertation committee members. Committee members are also responsible for certifying that the defense meets acceptable scholarly standards. The dissertation defense is open to university faculty and students. In addition, the dissertation committee determines the adequacy of the oral examination and written dissertation.
