PRECEPTOR PROGRAM

A preceptor is defined in Ohio law as a “licensed nurse who provides supervision of a nursing student’s clinical experience at the clinical agency in which the preceptor is employed, to no more than one student at any one time, and who works at the directions of a faculty member participating in the course in which the student is enrolled."

A clinical preceptor for the APN student provides guidance to help the student develop appropriate skills and clinical judgment in assessment, diagnostic reasoning and treatment of patients in clinical settings.  In addition to their clinical expertise, preceptors should be committed to provide this learning experience and be responsive to the needs of the individual student.  The preceptor should also be able to evaluate the student’s ability to meet the course objective and perform in a clinical setting. 

Preceptors at the Bolton School of Nursing provide an extremely valuable aspect to nursing education. Each brings unique skills and unique opportunities to a motivated student population. Preceptors play a very active role in the growth of new health care providers and help make the connection between academic learning and clinical practice.
