APN Program Clinical Preceptors

A clinical preceptor for a Nurse Practitioner student provides guidance to help students develop appropriate skills and clinical judgment in assessment, diagnostic reasoning and treatment of patients in clinical settings during a designated time frame.  A preceptor is also responsible for evaluating the performance of the student’s ability to fulfill predetermined clinical objectives.

The clinical preceptor displays the following characteristics:

  • Is an interested, experienced individual who supports the expanded role of the nurse.
  • Is physically present in the clinical situation with adequate time for consultation and works on a one-on-one basis with the student.
  • Is committed to the concept of the team approach in the delivery of health care services.
  • Is responsive to the needs of the students.
  • Facilitates achievement of the student practicum objectives by identifying learning experiences for the student including assistance in patient selection, conferences, rounds, agency meetings, and encourages the student’s participation in the same.
  • Reviews all patient related findings of the student on an ongoing basis to assure accuracy, appropriateness of referrals and that documentation is complete and cosigned.
  • Conferences with the student as necessary to assess progress and learning needs.
  • Conferences with the instructor in the MSN program whenever there is a concern regarding the student’s clinical performance.
  • Evaluated the student’s performance during and at the completion of the practicum and/or rotation.
  • Reviews  general performance and grades student on a pass/fail scale.

Preceptor Benefits

In appreciation for your preceptorship, the administration and faculty of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing wish to express gratitude by offering the following benefits:

  • Tuition Support: For each semester that the preceptor enters into a preceptorship arrangement, s/he is eligible for tuition support of one-third the cost for one non-clinical course, up to 1 credit hour. The course should be taken within two semesters of the preceptorship.     
  • Library Access: Preceptors are offered library access to all the libraries at Case Western Reserve University for the duration of the contract period. As clinical faculty, you are eligible to obtain a Case ID so that you can access the electronic library.  To request library access,  notify the Coordinator of the Preceptor Program, Sandra Jorgensen of your request and include your date of birth and a non Case email.  Once you are notified of your Case ID, you will need to activate your Case ID. You will also need to download the VPN client software.
  • Awards for Excellence in Precepting: Each year, a preceptor is selected by students to receive an award for excellence in precepting at the May Commencement.

You now have the opportunity to attend computer and technology related classes for free at the Kelvin Smith Library at Case. Topics include PowerPoint, Access/Excel, Dreamweaver, Desktop Publishing, making a web page, navigating electronic information, among others. Most of these classes take place during the weekdays, but if you have a flexible schedule, we are happy to make these available to you.

You can go to library.case.edu/caselearns/ to check out what is available. Click on the Case Learns logo on the right, or you can print out the PDF version of the course catalog. You will need to obtain a Case ID in order to register. If you find a class you are interested in, please email me at slj16@case.edu and I will help you get set up. Please keep in mind that these courses are offered to you at no cost, but if you fail to show up for a class without canceling, there is a charge assessed. Class sizes are limited by the number of computers available.

You also now need a Case ID to access any of the electronic journals due to the VPN program. If you are interested in accessing this, please let me know and I will assist you in getting set up.
