Lauren Flaherty, BSN Student

Expected Year of Graduation: 2010

Hometown: Tyngsboro, Massachusetts

Came to FPB because...
Case Western Reserve University was the only school that offered clinical experience starting in the freshman year of study. For me, putting my classroom and lab knowledge to practical use is the best way to learn. Being able to learn about skills, practice them, and then perform them on patients really helps me understand.

My most unique FPB experience:
The most unique experience I have had here at Case Western Reserve was spending a night on the Labor and Delivery floor of University Hospitals. I was able to shadow one of my professors and assist with pre-labor procedures. I was also able to watch a C-section while standing at the end of the operating table and experience the birth of a baby!

The first word that comes to my mind when I think of:
FPB... Dignity
Nursing... Caring
Cleveland... Home away from home
Case Western Reserve University Friendship
Clinicals... Experience

The best nursing class at FPB I've taken so far:
Physical Assessment. It was the most hands-on class, where you really put your anatomy knowledge to use! It is something you use both inside and outside the hospital setting, and it really gives you an insight to the human body.

The best thing about being an FPB student:
The friendship and bonding that you have with all the other students is the best thing for me. We are all such a small class and spend so much time together that we really grow to know one another and learn from each other. We all can learn from books and lectures, but learning from our own personal experience and those of our peers is the best and most exciting way to learn.

If I could...
...travel anywhere in the world, I would go to: Italy
...eat dinner with any one person, living or deceased, real or fictional, I would choose: Florence Nightingale
...live in any era throughout history, I would pick: Victorian era
...invent anything, I would create: Instant transporter!

My plans after graduation:
After graduation I plan to move back to Boston and hopefully work in the children's or women's hospital there. I hope to go back to school to become either a midwife or a nurse practitioner.
