Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing
The purpose of this letter is to elucidate the promotion and tenure process at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing (FPB) at Case Western Reserve University. One of the documents that you will find of interest is the University Faculty Handbook. It suggests, among other things, that faculty members at FPB are scholars and teachers who have important responsibilities to students, colleagues, and the administration.
FPB faculty members are also expected to be good citizens, serve in their professional organizations, and in local and global communities. The methods that a faculty member uses to address these responsibilities are varied, and may change overtime. Hence, it is difficult to formulate specific guidelines and protocols that can guide faculty members during all aspects of their career planning and goal acquisition. Too much specificity in guidelines and protocols may be constricting.
However, guidelines and protocols are necessary for evaluating the performance and success of each faculty member. These processes are outlined in the School of Nursing’s By-Laws, Criteria for Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure for Regular Tenure Track and Non-Tenure Track Faculty Members, and the Annual Review Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Process and Performance Indicators. You will, however, be expected to respond to numerous role demands. Hence, I urge you to carefully address the criteria by which you will be assessed by peers in the local and global communities, and the University administration.
Provost Goldberg’s memo and attachments contain useful and detailed information that will be helpful in planning your tenure and promotion portfolio. I encourage you to read the memo from Provost Goldberg carefully. In addition, I have attached the 2008-2009 Tenure and Promotion Timeline for the FPB School of Nursing. This timeline is also a practical tool that will aid you when you are developing your portfolio for tenure and /or promotion at Case.
If you have any questions about the promotion and tenure process, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope you will have a wonderful academic year. Thank you for your commitment to FPB and to Case! |
