A member of the CWRU
faculty since 1969, May L. Wykle, PhD, RN, FGSA, is a nationally recognized expert in the
field of aging. Her research interests include geriatric mental health, family
care-giving, minority caregivers, and caring for patients with dementia. She has
served s director of the University Center on Aging and Health since 1988 after serving
two years as interim director. In addition, she has a strong clinical background in
psychiatric mental health nursing. She has pursued her research and initiated education programs internationally in Europe, Africa, and Asia. She has served as visiting professor at the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Houston and the University of Zimbabwe in Africa. Most recently, she completed a nine-month appointment as the first Pope Eminent Scholar at the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Human Development at Georgia Southwestern State University and subsequently became a member of the Institute's board. Dean Wykle has been a nurse since her 1956 graduation from the Martins Ferry Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her B.S.N. in nursing, a M.S.N. in psychiatric nursing, and a Ph.D. in education from CWRU. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the profession's highest honor, and a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. In 1986, she was asked to participate in a study commissioned by the Congress of the nation's nursing homes. In 1993, she was named to the White House Conference on Aging. Next year she will assume the presidency of Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing honor society. |
