WHO STUDENT EXPERIENCE ABROAD
There are a number of possibilities for student experiences
abroad, depending on your interests, focus, and required courses.
In some programs, students have the option of completing part
of their coursework abroad. In the past few years, students have
gone to such countries and regions as Thailand, Chile, St. Lucia, Scotland, and Uganda, among
others.
In addition, there are international programs not related to coursework
where students participate to assist local communities in meeting
their needs. These programs include Intercambio
Cultural Maya and the Minority International
Research Training program (funded by Fogarty International
Center of the National Institutes of Health to the University
of Illinois, Chicago).

There is a need for the development of a global perspective in community health. This experience can provide such a perspective through shared experiences by students in both countries concerning strengths in each system of care and examining how each can be most effective. The goal is to enhance student engagement in learning about others in the same profession who have different "global orientations."

MSN Students |
This trip is for MSN students only. Please contact Samira Hussney for more information. |
Guatemala |
 |
San Raymundo is located in the highlands of Guatemala, one hour northwest of Guatemala City. Our groups of volunteers (physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, optometrists, nurses, translators, kitchen staff, construction staff, and ancillary personnel) operate a week-long clinic in a free-standing hospital. Community teaching and mobile health clinic are also part of the clinic. |
Due to preceptor responsibilities, each trip is limited to four MSN students (first come, first served). Current preceptor is FPB alum and Survivor: Guatemala contestant Margaret Bobonich, MSN. More preceptors will be added for future trips.
Selection Process:
Students must submit their "Refuge International Medical Mission Volunteer" applications to Samira Hussney by the deadline (TBA). Selectees will then be notified via email.
Students must complete evaluations and give brief presentations about their experiences after returning from their trip.
The Guatemala trip is coordinated with Refuge International. For full details (including housing, food, air transport, guidelines, forms, etc.), visit their website. |
