Alzheimer’s Research at Case Western Reserve University
An estimated 2.4 to 4.5 Americans are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, which currently has no known cure. However, two university researchers are making great strides to understand this disease.
- Dr. Hyoung-gon Lee, a professor of pathology, is examining the role of abnormal cell cycles in the process of neurodgeneration. Alzheimer’s much like cancer, results from the body’s inability to control cell cycles, Dr. Lee hypothesizes. Dr. Lee has been granted an award from the President’s Strategic Initiatives Fund to support his research.
- Dr. Peter Whitehouse, a professor of neurology, has published a book, The Myth of Alzheimer’s: What You Aren’t Being Told about Today’s Most Dreaded Diagnosis. The book explores the history of Alzheimer’s and describes individuals who are living and thriving with the disease. Dr. Whitehouse and his colleague Danny George give advice on strategies to improve the quality of life for aging people with memory impairments.
