June 5-6, 2010:
Kangaroo Care Certification Course (Cleveland, Ohio)

Kangaroo Care (KC) is the use of SKIN-to-SKIN contact between mother and infant to promote bonding, growth and development. Current research documents the benefits of KC as a key component of developmental care of ALL neonates, both full term and pre-term infants.

Attendees should include RNs, APNs, LPNs, Lactation Specialists and other health care professionals who are dedicated to promoting family-centered care, improving patient-family satisfaction through evidence based practice.

The FPB School of Nursing (OH-216/11-01/12) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association OBN-001-91, an accredited provider by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Assignment and approval of CEUs is in process.

Participants of this conference were able to:
  • Synthesize evidence related to Kangaroo Care
  • Recognize actual and potential applications of KC and evidence needed in healthy full term maternal-infant dyads
  • Explain knowledge and practice components of the Skin-to-Skin Program
  • Describe responsibilities and advantages of being certified in Kangaroo Care
  • Incorporate implementation processes in the development of an implementation plan for participant’s setting
  • Demonstrate specialized skills needed to safely implement Kangaroo Care for full term and preterm infants in special care, in delivery room, in postpartum and at home.
