Diana MorrisDiana Lynn Morris, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, the Florence Cellar Associate Professor of Gerontological Nursing and Executive Director of the University Center on Aging & Health, received the Arnold L. Heller Memorial Award from the Menorah Park Foundation.

Shanina KnightonShanina Knighton, PhD student, received first place in the Cleveland Clinic's Clinic Solutions – Mini Case Competition held November 13-14. It was a two day challenge that involved a randomized group of students from schools around the area to figure out a innovative way and vision for merging Akron General Hospital into the Cleveland Clinic system. She also took first place at the Girl Power Pitch Night event, as one of the female collegiate entrepreneurs representing the four Northeast Ohio Blackstone LaunchPad programs. She had 3 minutes to pitch her business/nonprofit followed by 2 minutes of Q/A from the judges.

A new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will be offered this fall. The course, Take the Lead on Healthcare Quality Improvement, presents the concepts and processes of quality improvement (QI) and the importance of QI in improving patient outcomes. Its aim is to enhance the competence of working healthcare professionals to lead and participate in interprofessional healthcare teams that are focused on quality improvement. The instructors are Mary A. Dolansky, PhD, RN, associate Professor in the School of Nursing, and Shirley M. Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN, the Edward J. and Louise Mellen Professor of Nursing and associate dean for research.

Her presentation "Germs-Be-Off" focused on her business concept proposal, a device that is a patient-controlled hand sanitation dispenser that affixes to the hospital bed rail for patient use. This device will remind patients at specified meal times and every two hours to clean their hands, as well as have others clean their hands when they come within a 2 foot radius of the bed.

WHOCC The World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Home Care Nursing, a Center of Excellence at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, has been redesignated as a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Collaborating Center. The approval will last until 2017. The school is one of only a few dozen collaborating centers for nursing worldwide, including ten (10) in the United States.

BSN student Julia O'Brien was awarded a Blue Ribbon for her research poster, "Have You Considered Palliative Care for Your Sickle Cell Patients?" from the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA).

Earlier this month, she also received the 2013 MNRS Undergraduate Student Research Scholars' Award, which was officially presented at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Research Conference on March 7-10, 2013 in Chicago.

Five FPB Professors Awarded as Among 20 Top-Notch Nursing Professors in Ohio by StateStats.org

Top Nursing Professors

  • Assistant Professor Carol Kelley, PhD, RN, CNP received the award for winning the ELNEC-Core Award from the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in January.
  • Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Madigan, PhD, RN, FAAN was awarded for being named the Independence Foundation Professor in Nursing Education in December 2012.
  • Medical Mutual of Ohio and Kent W. Clapp Chair and Professor Faye A. Gary, EdD, MS, RN, FAAN was chosen for being honored with the Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Nurses Division Award, which she received from the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN) in September 2012. She has also been recognized by the National Black Nurses Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • Associate Professor and Institutional Researcher Mary Quinn Griffin, PhD, RN, was chosen for this recognition for being recently inducted into the National League for Nursing 2012 Academy of Nursing Education Fellows in June 2012.
  • Assistant Professor Polly M. Mazanec, PhD, ACNP, AOCN, FPCN was recognized for receiving the 2013 ONS Mary Nowotny Excellence in Cancer Nursing Education Award in January.

According to StateStats.org, the "goal of the top professors list is to highlight post-secondary educators who have been awarded recently for excellence in the classroom, on campus, and/or in the community. We found many professors who fit the bill, but focused on those recognized within the past 12 months."
