Welcome to the SMART Center

The SMART Center is a National Institute of Nursing Research/National Institute of Health funded Center of Excellence to build the Science of Self-Management: A Systems Approach (P30 NR010676).

The SMART Center addresses Self-Management at four levels of system:

• Individual

• Family

• Organization

• Community

Aims of the SMART Center:

• Expand knowledge related to self-management through interdisciplinary investigations of self-management

• Serve as a national leader in research and dissemination of research findings to the scientific community

• Diffuse knowledge into clinical practice and policy to enhance the use of self-management strategies to improve the health, function and quality of life of individuals

The above cores provide resources for researchers in the self-management field and coordinate their efforts to advance the science of self-management. In addtition, four pilot studies are currently being funded by the SMART Center.

 

What Is Self-Management?

Self-management incorporates concepts of self-care, adherence, compliance, health behavior change, patient education, and collaborative care. The science of self-management has grown as behavioral science has progressed.
